Dichloromethane, also known as dichloromethane or DXM, is a solvent used in paint thinners and other products. It has been associated with cancer, cognitive impairment, and immediate death by asphyxiation. If you need to remove a paint or coating, avoid products that contain other toxic chemicals such as methylene chloride and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). See our list of safer foods for more information.
If you are using a product containing methylene chloride, you may be able to breathe in the fumes of this chemical. This chemical can also be absorbed through the skin.
There is no way we can solve this problem with purchases. We don’t have to do this. When you enter a store, you must be sure that the products on the store shelves are safe.
Companies should not sell products containing hazardous chemicals, especially as scientists continue to learn more about the “silent epidemic” caused by the cumulative effect of all the toxic chemicals we are regularly exposed to. The state and federal governments should not allow chemicals to be placed on the market until they have been shown to be safe.
The only way to protect everyone from toxic chemicals like methylene chloride is to change policies at the government and corporate level so that safer solutions become the norm.
We work every day to protect you and your loved ones from these toxic chemicals. To join our fight, consider making a donation, join us in action, or subscribe to our mailing list.
When methylene chloride-based paint removers give off fumes, the chemical can cause choking and heart attacks. This has happened to many people, including Kevin Hartley and Joshua Atkins. No family will lose a loved one because of these products.
